All custom field settings


Allow multiple values

Check this option if you'd like the field to support more than one value.

Examples of multiple values are an Email short text field allowing someone to have more than one email address, an Interests tags field allowing someone to be tagged with multiple interests or an Organisation connections field allowing someone to belong to more than one organisation.

An example of a field that should not support multiple values is a Date of birth date field, as a person should only have one date of birth.

Some sorts of custom fields allow you to label values too, such as the labels for Work and Personal above. See this article for more information on Value Labels.

The following types of custom field support Allow multiple values:

  • Connections

  • Date

  • File

  • Image

  • Short text

  • Tags

  • Time


Value labels

Value Labels are used in conjunction with Allow multiple values. They provide a drop-down box next to a value allowing you to label it.

Here's an example showing an Email field which supports multiple values, you can see that the two email addresses have been labelled as Work and Personal.

To provide a drop-down list of labels for a given field, just enter a comma-separated list of options in the Value Labels setting:

The following types of custom field support Value labels:

  • Date

  • File

  • Image

  • Short text

  • Time


Checkbox text

This option appears for checkboxes, and refers to the text that appears to the side of the check box. You may include HTML in this content, in order to link off to terms & conditions or policies etc.

This setting only applies to Checkbox fields.


Connecting to (Connections fields)

For Connections field, this setting defines the type of data you are connecting to.

For example, let's say you want to link a person to their parent or guardian. You would add a connection field to the People section (where you are connecting from) and you would set the Connecting to setting to People too, because the parent or guardian is a person.

This setting only applies to Connections fields.


Show for tags

Keep your forms clutter-free and relevant to the data you're editing.

This setting works for People and Organisations in conjunction with the Person Type and Organisation Type tag fields.

By choosing tags in this section, this field will only appear in one of two circumstances:

  1. When the data you're editing is tagged with the relevant Person Type or Organisation Type tag
    ​

  2. Where the Ignore 'Show for tags' settings toggle is switched on for the form

All types of custom field support the Show for tags setting, but only for the following data types and tag fields:

  • People (via Person Type field)

  • Organisations (via Organisation Type field)


Options (for list-type fields)

There are various types of list fields available, including Dropdown Lists and Checkbox Lists amongst others. For this sort of field you must add options for someone to choose from.

Add one option per line in the Options setting. For example, here is an example of a Title dropdown list, with a different option per line:

Value / Label Options

The Options setting also allows Value:Label pairs - this means you can present a different label to the person using the form than is saved in the CRM.

Here is an example of a Radio List using Value:Label pairs:

When this Custom Field appears in a Form we see the Label part of the option:

When you see the response in your CRM, you see the Value instead of the label:

The following types of custom field support Options:

  • Dropdown list

  • Checklist

  • Multi select list

  • Radio list


Show label when displaying values

This setting affects whether the label for a field is displayed when viewing data.

Here are the settings for a Bio long text field with this setting checked:

And here is how that displays on a profile:

However, the label is arguably superfluous here, so here's how it looks with this setting unchecked:

All types of custom field support the support Show label when displaying value.


Tag type (Tags fields)

When you create a Tags field, the tags people can choose from will be populated from a Tag type.

You can learn more about adding and managing tag types here.

This setting specifies which Tag type will be used for this particular Tag Field. In our example, we have a Tag Field called Campaign donated to, and this uses a Tag type called Campaigns.

Often the name of the Tag Type and the Tag Field will be the same, for example, you might have a custom field called Interests which uses a tag type called Interests.

The Tag type setting is only available for Tags Fields.
